The Beginning
The Columbus Day Festival has been a cherished tradition for over 52 consecutive years, bringing the community together every October to celebrate with pride and joy. What started as a local festival has grown into one of Southeast Kansas's most beloved events.
In 1989, the Hot Air Balloon Regatta was introduced, adding a spectacular new dimension to the festival. Since then, it has become the festival's main attraction, drawing visitors from across the region to witness the breathtaking display of colorful balloons decorating the October sky.
Growth & Success
From its humble beginnings with just a few balloons, the regatta has grown to feature up to 20 magnificent hot air balloons from pilots throughout the area. The event has earned recognition as part of the fastest-growing festival in Southeast Kansas.
The festival showcases the best of small-town hospitality and community spirit. While it may not compete with larger balloon festivals in terms of numbers, Columbus offers something truly special—genuine warmth, charm, and a family-friendly atmosphere that can't be matched.
